How to Manage Your Energy on Competition Day

Competition day used to drain me before I even stepped on stage.
Not because of dancing—but because of nerves, overthinking, and trying to be “on” all the time.

If you dance hip hop or popping, you know it’s not just about skill. It’s about energy. And if you waste it too early… you’re done before finals even start.

Here’s what I learned the hard way.

Stop Performing Before You Perform

When I was younger, I’d mark full-out in the hallway. I’d freestyle at 60% in every cypher. I’d react to every battle like it was mine.

By the time it was actually my turn? My body felt heavy.

Now I protect my energy.

That means:

  • No unnecessary full-outs before my round

  • Calm breathing instead of hype screaming

  • Sitting down when I can

  • Saving my best face expressions for the stage—not the waiting area

Energy is currency. Spend it wisely.

Control Your Adrenaline

Adrenaline feels powerful. But if you don’t control it, it controls you.

Before battles I used to shake. My moves got rushed. My hits were messy.

Now I do something simple:

  • Slow inhale for 4

  • Hold for 4

  • Slow exhale for 6

It sounds basic. But it keeps me grounded.

In popping especially, control is everything. You can’t rush a wave. You can’t force a hit. Energy without control is just chaos.

Eat and Hydrate Like an Athlete

Real talk—competition days are long.

If you’re surviving on candy and one sip of water, don’t expect your body to cooperate.

I keep it simple:

  • Light but filling breakfast

  • Small snacks between rounds

  • Water all day—not just when I’m thirsty

Fuel isn’t optional. It’s part of training.

Don’t Waste Energy Comparing

This one is mental—but it drains you physically too.

Watching other dancers and thinking, “They’re better than me,” is exhausting.

Now I watch with curiosity instead of insecurity.

I ask:

  • What can I learn?

  • How can I respond?

Battles are about exchange—not ego.

Save the Explosion for the Right Moment

You don’t need to go 200% every round.

Sometimes calm confidence hits harder than wild tricks.

I’ve won rounds by staying composed while the other dancer burned out.
Control beats chaos. Presence beats panic.

Remember—competition day isn’t about who has the most energy.
It’s about who manages it best.

Train hard. Rest smart. Perform when it matters.

See you in the finals.
