How to Manage Your Energy on Competition Day

Competition day often looks like this: you wake up early, wait a long time, then have a few intense minutes on the floor, then wait again. All day long. The key question is: how do you preserve energy through all of it?

First rule: don't warm up too early. I've seen many dancers who start training at 8am for a competition that starts at 2pm. When their turn comes, they're already tired. Instead — warm up 30-40 minutes before your number. Not earlier.

Second rule: eat light and regularly. A heavy meal before competing is a mistake. I prefer a small breakfast, snacks every 2-3 hours, and I avoid simple sugars right before stepping on the floor — because after the brief energy boost comes a crash.

Third rule: manage your head. Long waiting can kill you mentally. I have my ritual: I listen to music from my competition playlist, do short breathing exercises, and only talk to people who support me. I avoid comparing myself to other dancers that day.

Fourth rule: learn to "switch on." Right before going out, I need to be in full readiness. My short protocol: shake out (shake my whole body), deep breath, smile (yes, really — it signals positive mindset to the brain), and focus on the first move.

You manage your energy on competition day from the moment you wake up, not from the moment you step on the floor. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Treat it accordingly.
